If you have been disconnected from the natural hair community as I have for the past few months, you may not have known that the well-known Monroe Sisters, natural hair gurus and fashionistas, have been dealing with a tragic, life-threatening health issue effecting Meechy Monroe. Recently, the NHC was floored by the terrible news of Meechy’s fight for her life against a rare brain sarcoma, a cancerous vascular tumor. The presence of this tumor has brought on multiple mild strokes, ultimately affecting her ability to speak and presenting other physical challenges. In an open letter to supporters, Meechy shared her experience, stating on April 15, 2014, she experienced numbness in her right hand, facial dropping, and slurring of speech, classic signs of a stroke. The stroke she suffered on that fateful day would be the first in a line of three in addition to two brain surgeries. Damage to areas of the brain responsible for language resulted in a diagnosis of Aphasia, a fundamental disconnect between the formulation and comprehension of language. Bravely and selflessly, as opposed to losing her hair to treatment of the disease, Meechy opted to shave her hair and donate her luscious tresses to Locks of Love, a non-profit organization that creates quality hair prosthetics for financially disadvantaged children under 18 suffering from long-term hair loss from any diagnosis.
Meechy had her last brain surgery on July 3, 2014 and as of September 6, 2014, began her 4th week of radiation and chemo treatments. Within the letter to her fans, Meechy soothed concerns by sharing that her health has been improving significantly “with the help of physical, occupational, and speech therapy.” She also reports that she is thankful for not having suffered the nausea, vomiting, and fatigue associated with the radiation treatments. Through it all, she has remained positive and stood firm in her faith. We, here at 2KL, send our thoughts, prayers, and good vibes to the Monroe Sisters and their family during this trial and we wish Meechy a full and speedy recovery and ask that God bless her and her family.
